Willem De Sitter



De Sitter, Willem (1872–1934), Dutch astronomer and cosmologist who examined the age, size, and structure of the universe. His greatest achievement was his recognition that distant galaxies are receding at greater speeds than nearer ones, which showed that the universe is expanding.
