Debrecen

Debrecen (pop. 214,700), city in Hungary, 120 m (193 km) east of Budapest. A market for surrounding farms since the Middle Ages, it is also a religious, political, cultural, and educational center. In the 1500s it was a stronghold of Protestantism.
