Jacques Louis David



David, Jacques Louis (1748–1825), French painter and leader of the neoclassical movement. His style, combining formal perfection with romantic feeling and didactic purpose, is exemplified in his Oath of the Horatii (1784), Death of Socrates (1787), and Death of Marat (1793). He was Napoleon's official painter.
