Dam

Dam, barrier built across a river to hold back the water. Dams are built to control flooding, to store water for drinking and irrigation, to improve navigation, or to produce hydroelectric power. The artificial lakes or reservoirs formed behind the dams provide a refuge for wild life and are often used for recreation.
