Dalmatia



Dalmatia, mountainous region and province of Croatia, bordering the Adriatic Sea and including about 300 islands. Historically, the area has been dominated by the Romans (1st century B.C.-5th century A.D.), Venetians (1420–1797), and Austrians(1815–1918). Parts have also been dominated by Hungary and Turkey. The present population lives on tourism, fishing, and farming, producing wine, olive oil, and cotton. There is also shipbuilding, bauxite mining, and limestone quarrying.
