Dakar

Dakar (pop. 800,000), capital and largest city of Senegal, on the far western tip of Africa. The modern city originated in a fort built by French colonists in 1857. Dakar is a cultural center and one of West Africa's main commercial hubs. Its port is the most heavily trafficked in the region.
