George Armstrong Custer



Custer, George Armstrong (1839–76), controversial U.S. cavalry officer. Custer proved himself an outstanding Union cavalry leader during the Civil War. Appointed as a lieutenant colonel in 1866, he joined General Hancock's successful expedition against the Cheyenne. He was killed in the famous battle of Little Bighorn.
