Merce Cunningham



Cunningham, Merce (1919–), U.S. dancer and choreographer noted for his abstract dances incorporating pure, isolated movements without emotional overtones. As a soloist with Martha Graham's company (1939–45), he created several important roles. He began his choreographic career in 1942, creating dances for the music of modern composers. He formed his own company in 1953.
