American Party

American Party, conservative U.S. political party, originally called the American Independent Party. Established in 1968, the party's purpose was to support the presidential candidacy of George C. Wallace, governor of Alabama. Wallace's platform was based largely on his opposition to desegregation of Alabama schools. The name was also used by the Know-Nothing Party of the 1850s.
