American Philosophical Society



American Philosophical Society, oldest surviving U.S. learned society, based in Philadelphia, where it was founded by Benjamin Franklin (1753). The U.S. counterpart of the Royal Society of London, it has nearly 600 U.S. and foreign members. It has an extensive library, much relating to Colonial science.
