Alliance for Progress

Alliance for Progress, program to aid the economic and social development of Latin America, instituted by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and brought into being when 22 nations and the United States signed the Charter of Punta del Este. The Latin American countries drew up development plans and guaranteed the larger part of capital costs, the United States meeting the remainder. Most U.S. funds are administered by the Agency for International Development, and since 1970 the Organization of American States (OAS) has also reviewed and coordinated programs.
