Albany Regency

Albany Regency, group of politicians with headquarters in Albany who controlled the New York State Democratic party (1820–54), with the first U.S. political machine. Among its members were Martin Van Buren, William L. Marcy, Silas Wright, and John A. Dix. Marcy's slogan, “To the victors belong the spoils,” was its guiding principle; it rewarded the party faithful with government jobs. Starting in 1842, opposition groups (Barnburners and Hunkers) developed similar strategies, ultimately having a divisive effect on the party and diminishing the prestige of the Albany Regency.
