Yorktown



Yorktown (pop. 450), town in southeastern Virginia, seat of York County, on the York River, and site of the last campaign of the Revolutionary War. In 1781, 16,000 American and French troops, led by Generals Washington and Rochambeau, laid siege to 7,000 British troops under Lord Cornwallis in Yorktown. With British naval reinforcements defeated by U.S. Admiral de Grasse and escape impossible, Cornwallis surrendered.
