Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, research center for marine science located at the southwest tip of Cape Cod, Mass. Its facilities include laboratories as well as deep-sea vessels. Scientists conduct research in areas such as marine biology, physics, engineering, and chemistry. Established in 1930 as a nonprofit, independent institution, it offers programs for undergraduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral students.
