Henry Wirz



Wirz, Henry (d. 1865), Confederate army officer in the U.S. Civil War, director of the Andersonville prison camp, in which Northern prisoners were crowded into a too-small stockade and abused and neglected. Wirz was tried by a military tribunal and hanged, the only Confederate soldier to be executed for war crimes.
