Winged lion

Winged lion, mythic beast of ancient Babylonia and Assyria, represented in paintings and statues. The beast had a man's head on a winged lion's body. Enormous winged lion statues were placed at a city's gate or the entranceway to a palace to frighten off harmful spirits or humans.
