Whooping crane



Whooping crane (Grus americana), white wading bird with a red cap on its head. The tallest bird in North America, it reaches a height of about 5 ft (1.5 m). Once widespread, whooping cranes have for several decades been close to extinction and have been preserved only by determined conservation measures.
