Marcus Whitman



Whitman, Marcus (1802–47), U.S. physician and Presbyterian missionary who established settlements in the Pacific Northwest and encouraged emigration to Oregon. In 1847 his settlers brought an epidemic of measles with them that caused the death of many Cayuse children. Thinking the children had been poisoned, the Native Americans killed Whitman.
