Westminster Abbey

Westminster Abbey, officially the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter, English Gothic church in London, a national shrine. The Abbey has been the traditional scene of English coronations since that of William the Conqueror, and is a burial place for English monarchs and famous subjects, including many of England's greatest poets, who lie in the Poets' Corner. The present building, begun in 1245 by Henry III, is on the site of a church built (1065) by Edward the Confessor.
