Water meter

Water meter, device to measure the quantity of water flowing through a pipe or other channel. Such meters, connected with registers that display numerical readings indicating gallons, cubic feet, or other quantities, are used to measure home or business use of water from public water systems or other sources, or to monitor flow in rivers and other moving bodies of water. Quantity may be measured by the water's motion or pressure, or by using magnetism, sound waves, or other energy affected by the rate of flow.
