Sherwood Larned Washburn



Washburn, Sherwood Larned (1911– ), U.S. anthropologist. An expert on ape behavior and anatomy, he was one of the first scientists to study apes in their natural environments. Washburn was editor of American Journal of Physical Anthropology (1955–57). Previously on the faculties of Columbia University and the University of Chicago, he has been on the faculty of University of California, Berkeley, since 1959.
