Warren, Earl (1891–1974), chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1953–69). Attorney general (1939–43) and governor (1943–53) of California, he was Republican vice presidential candidate in 1948. Appointed to the Supreme Court by President Eisenhower, his leadership of the court resulted in a number of landmark liberal judgments concerning individual and civil liberties, notably Brown v.
