Victoria

Victoria, state in southeast Australia, the second-smallest and most densely populated in the country. It is divided east-west by an extension of the Australian Alps, with lowlands, hills, and valleys in the south and low plains north and west. The climate is temperate. Agriculture is important: wheat, oats, barley, and grapes are grown, and cattle and sheep are raised. Automobiles, textiles, and processed foods are produced, and coal and some gold are mined. Melbourne is the capital and largest city.
