Amerigo Vespucci



Vespucci, Amerigo (1454–1512),Italian navigatorfor whom America was named. In 2 voyages (1499–1500, 1501–2) he explored the coast of South America and deduced that the New World must be a continent and not part of Asia. The name America first appeared on a map published in 1507.
