Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd



Verwoerd, Hendrik Frensch (1901–66), Dutch-born South African politician and premier (1958–66). A professor of psychology from 1927, he became editor of the Afrikaans nationalist newspaper Die Transvaaler (1937). A senator from 1948, he was appointed minister of native affairs (1950), and enforced apartheid rigorously, stressing “separate development” and creating the homelands. He was assassinated.
