United Empire Loyalists



United Empire Loyalists, term for people of the original 13 American colonies who remained loyal to Britain during the Revolution and who emigrated to Canada. The largest group, some 50,000, left New York City in 1783 and founded New Brunswick (1784) and Upper Canada (now Ontario, 1791).
