Toxin

Toxin, poisonous substance produced by a living organism. Examples of toxin-producing organisms include fungi, which secrete substances that destroy bacteria (and provide antibiotics), and poisonous spiders and snakes, which deliver their toxin via fangs. The symptoms of many infectious diseases (e.g., cholera, diphtheria, tetanus) are due to the release of toxins by the bacteria.
