Totalitarianism



Totalitarianism, system of government in which the state exercises wide-ranging control over individuals within its jurisdiction. Usually, a totalitarian state has only one political party, led by a dictator, and an official ideology; dissent is suppressed. Nazi Germany epitomized the repression of totalitarian states.
