Toledo



Toledo (pop. 62,800), city in central Spain 40 mi (64 km) southwest of Madrid, seat of Toledo province, former Roman and Visgoth capital. Possessing minimal industry, Toledo produces textiles, sabers, and firearms. The entire city has been declared a national monument and contains beautiful examples of medieval and Renaissance art and architecture. Toledo's many landmarks include the Alcázar (citadel), Gothic cathedral (the archbishop is Spain's primate), and El Greco's house, which serves as a museum for several of his paintings.
