Toledo

Toledo (pop. 329,300), city in northwestern Ohio, at the mouth of the Maumee River on Lake Erie. It was settled in the early 19th century after Gen. Anthony Wayne's victory over Native American forces at the nearby Battle of Fallen Timbers (1794) and the establishment of Fort Industry (1795). The settlements of Port Lawrence and Vistula, built near the site of Fort Industry, merged in 1833 to form Toledo. Today Toledo is an important Great Lakes port and manufacturing center (e.g., glass, oil products, machines), and a cultural center with 2 universities, a major art museum, symphony, opera, and one of the nation's best zoos.
