Tigris River

Tigris River, easternmost of the two great rivers of ancient Mesopotamia. The Tigris-Euphrates valley was the cradle of Middle East civilizations. Baghdad, city of the Abbasids, now capital of Iraq, stands on its banks. It rises in the Taurus Mountains in Turkey and flows 1,180 mi (1,900 km) southeast through Iraq to join the Euphrates at Basra.
