Thames River, England's chief waterway, winding east from the Cotswolds to its North Sea estuary. The Thames is 210 mi (338 km) long. On its banks lie Oxford, Reading, Eton, Windsor Castle, Runnymede, Hampton Court Palace, and Greenwich. Canals link it to the West and Midlands. Above London it displays fine, gentle scenery; below London it is of considerable importance for shipping. It is tidal up to Teddington (10 mi/16 km west of London).
