Tartu



Tartu (German: Dorpat), city in eastern Estonia, lying on the Emajogi River. It was a fortified settlement in the 5th century A.D. From the 11th century it was at different times held by the Russians, Swedes, and Poles; Russian control was established in 1704. Its university, founded 1632, is now an important center for the study of botany and agriculture.
