Tashkent



Tashkent (pop. 2,000,000), capital of Uzbekistan, located in Chirchik Valley west of the Chatkal Mountains. One of the oldest cities in Asia, it was an important trading center for Arab, Muslim, and Mongol empires. Major products are textiles and agricultural machinery. Rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1966, it is an important cultural center.
