James Ewell Brown ‘Jeb’ Stuart



Stuart, James Ewell Brown ‘Jeb’ (1833–64), Confederate cavalry officer. Upon resigning from the U.S. Army, he won command of a Confederate brigade after the first Battle of Bull Run (1861) and began his famous cavalry raids in 1862. Promoted to command all the cavalry in the North Virginia army, he led the cavalry force at Gettysburg (1863). He was killed in the Wilderness campaign.
