Stoke-on-Trent (pop. 252,900), city in England known for its pottery, located on the River Trent. Created in 1910 by the confederation of 5 ceramic-producing towns called The Potteries, it achieved status as a city in 1925. It still exists as the pottery center of England. Its other industries include coal mining and steel and iron production.
