Richard Stockton



Stockton, Richard (1730–81), member of the Continental Congress and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. A lawyer from New Jersey, he was appointed chief justice of his state's Supreme Court in 1776. Soon after, he was captured and imprisoned by the British.
