Stockholm



Stockholm (pop. 693,100), capital of Sweden, located on a network of islands on the country's eastern coast. It is Sweden's major commercial, industrial, cultural, and financial center, and an important port. Chief industries are machinery, paper and print, shipbuilding, chemicals, and foodstuffs. Founded in the 13th century, it was long dominated by the Hanseatic League. It became the capital in 1634.
