Staten Island



Staten Island, in New York Harbor, 5 mi (8 km) southwest of the Battery tip of Manhattan Island. Staten Island, with an area of more than 60 sq mi (155 sq km), comprises the whole borough and county of Richmond, one of the 5 boroughs of New York City. The island is connected with Manhattan by ferry, with Brooklyn by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, and with New Jersey by several bridges. The first permanent settlements on Staten Island were established in the 1660s. It is now a residential suburb and industrial area.
