Springfield



Springfield (pop. 529,519), city in Massachusetts. Located on the east bank of the Connecticut River, near the Connecticut state line, it is a commercial and industrial center. Springfield is basically a manufacturing city; its factories turn out machinery, chemicals, electrical equipment, and a wide variety of other goods. It has long been a center of firearms manufacture. Springfield was first settled in the 1630s. It is the home of the Basketball Hall of Fame and of Springfield College, American International College, and Western New England College.
