Spinal tap



Spinal tap, or lumbar puncture, procedure to remove cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the lumbar spinal canal using a fine needle. It is used in diagnosis of meningitis, encephalitis, multiple sclerosis, and tumors. In neurology it may be used in treatment, by reducing CSF pressure or allowing insertion of drugs.
