South Bend



South Bend (pop. 247,052), city in northern Indiana, seat of St. Joseph County. Founded as a fur trading post on the St. Joseph River at the site of a Miami Native American village in the early 1820s, South Bend is now a center for commerce and education. It is the seat of the University of Notre Dame, Indiana University-South Bend Campus, and St. Mary's College. Industries include the production of automotive parts, plastics, and machinery.
