Southampton



Southampton (pop. 208,100), English seaport city, on the River Test, near the English Channel. The city is England's chief passenger port. Founded as a Roman settlement by A.D. 43, Southampton's modern industries include ship building and repair, construction, harbor services, and tobacco processing. Of interest to visitors are various medieval structures, including Bar Gate, a portion of wall from the Middle Ages, and the priory of St. Denys (1124).
