Sorghum



Sorghum, widely cultivated cereal crop (Sorghum vulgare), the most important grown in Africa. It grows best in warm conditions and it is vital as a drought-resistant crop. For human food, the grain is first ground into a meal and then made into porridge, bread, or cakes. Some varieties yield molasses from the cane's juice. The grain is also used as a cattle feed and the whole plants as forage. Many types are in cultivation, including durra and kaffir.
