Margaret Chase Smith



Smith, Margaret Chase (1897– ), U.S. legislator, first woman to serve in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. She was named to replace her husband (a representative from Maine) when he died in office in 1940, and was later elected for 4 full terms. As a senator, she was one of the first opponents of Senator Joseph McCarthy. In 1964 she became the first woman from a major party to campaign for the presidency.
