George Pratt Shultz



Shultz, George Pratt (1920– ), U.S. secretary of state (1982–89). A former dean of the Graduate School of Business at the University of Chicago, in Pres. Richard Nixon's administration he was secretary of labor (1969–70), director of the Office of Management and Budget (1970–72), and secretary of the treasury (1972–74). He was president of the Bechtel Corp. when Pres. Ronald Reagan appointed him to succeed Alexander Haig as secretary of state. He was awarded the 1992 Seoul Peace Prize.
