Norman Edward Shumway



Shumway, Norman Edward (1923– ), U.S. surgeon who performed the first adult cardiac transplant in the United States, Jan. 6, 1968, at Stanford Medical Center. Shumway is also known for pioneering research in measuring and combating rejection of transplanted hearts and in other open-heart surgery, such as valve transplantation.
