Shire

Shire, administrative division in Great Britain. The Anglo-Saxon shires, first organized in the A.D. 800s, were made up of smaller divisions called hundreds. A shire was headed by an ealdorman and a sheriff. The term shire was eclipsed in the 1400s by the word county.
