Shipworm



Shipworm, bivalve mollusk (Teredo navalis) notorious for burrowing into the timbers of piers and wooden ships. The body is long and wormlike, with the shell reduced to a tiny pair of abrasive plates at the head end. These are used for rasping into wood—at a rate sometimes exceeding 1 ft (30.5 cm) per month.
