Karl Jay Shapiro



Shapiro, Karl Jay (1913– ), U.S. poet and literary critic. His early poetry, such as V-Letter and Other Poems (1944; Pulitzer Prize), shows the influence of W. H. Auden and was admired for its verbal conceits. Later work, such as The Bourgeois Poet (1964), became more Whitmanesque. His Collected Poems: 1948–1978 appeared in 1978.
